It was the fall of 1983. October in Michigan. I was in my early 20s then, and my husband and I had moved out to Lake Orion, Michigan to be more in the country. We were renting a condo and it was not far from a huge old cemetery beyond a small bridge. The bridge was over a dry creek bed at that time of year. No houses or anything at all really near it.

My younger sister had come up to visit from the Detroit area, and being a big baby about anything remotely scary, my husband and I decided to take her for a drive out to the old cemetery.

It was twilight when we got there.We drove onto the bridge and stopped and parked,facing the cemetery. As far as we could see, there was nothing but gravestones.

The sky was turning purple as the sun began to set. All the trees were skeletal looking, having shed all their leaves, and were standing naked out in the cold October air.

As soon as we stopped the car and turned off the ignition, I began to spin a totally untrue story about how a man had brought a young girl out to this spot and had raped and murdered her. We were in a 1968 Camero, which has a very small interior.

My sister was in the back seat, and as I turned to gauge her reaction to my fake tale of terror, she was obviously starting to become scared enough that she had that look of a deer caught in the headlights of an oncoming car.

Before I could start to really get into the bloody details of my story, she began to yell, "Let's leave. Right Now. Let's GO!" The next thing we all heard was three very loud booming knocks that sounded like they were coming right underneath the car, under the very spot on the bridge we were parked.

This scared the hell out of all three of us! My husband turned the car on,and we burned rubber getting out of there. I believe that something in that cemetery had a very good sense of humour and perfect timing. Instead of me just scaring my poor sister, all three of us got a scare and an experience I will never forget.

Ghost Stories of Mansfield Reformatory

* Administration Wing
Visitors and employees have reported experiencing strong paranormal events in the administration wing where Warden Glattke and his wife Helen resided. The story is Helen, while reaching for a box in the closet, knocked a gun off the shelf to the floor, causing a bullet to discharge into her chest. She was rushed to the Mansfield General Hospital where she died as a result of her injuries.

Rumors ran rampant that Warden Glattke was responsible for Helen's death, but there was never any proof to substantiate such rumors. Ten years later Glattke suffered a heart attack and died at the same hospital where Helen died.

Some believe that Helen and Warden Glattke haunt the administration rooms to this day. The strong smell of Helen's rose perfume reportedly floats in and out of her pink bathroom. Visitors report felling a gush of cold air pass through them as the wander through this wing. It is not uncommon to hear of a jammed camera shutter, which unexplainably worked again once the visitor left the area.

Ted Glattke, the youngest son of Helen and Warden Glattke, has said that most of the information written about his parents haunting Mansfield Reformatory is based on sensationalism and inaccurate stories.
* The Chapel
The Chapel is suspected of many paranormal events and some believe it is nucleus for much of the prison's haunting tales. Rumors that the Chapel was first an execution room, where inmates were tortured and died slow deaths while hanging from the rafters, may account for the many reported orbs photographed and the strange recordings some say they have captured in this area of the prison. Visitors have reported seeing spirits lingering near doorways, only to vanish once their presence is detected.

* The Infirmary
The infirmary where many prisoners died miserable deaths is known in paranormal circles to set off EMF detectors and claims of clusters of orbs have been captured in photographs. There have also been several reports from visitors that they have felt unexplained gushes of air pass by them.

* The Basement
The spirit of a 14-year-old who was beaten to death in the basement is said to linger in the dark crumbling hallways, which twist around the dark decaying basement. Also, the spirit of a former Reformatory employee named George is said to haunt the basement halls.

* The Library
The Reformatory's library and a small inmate's graveyard are believed by some to be haunted. Visitors have reported seeing objects move in the graveyard and equipment failure is not uncommon in the library. Psychics visiting the library have reported seeing the spirit of a young woman, possibly Helen or a nurse who was killed by one of the prisoners.

* The Cellblocks
Prisoners told of feeling someone tucking them in at night and it was rumored that the ghost of Helen or the nurse would moved in and out of the cells, bringing a touch of comfort to the inmates with a simple tuck of a blanket.

* The Hole
The hole, located in the basement of the prison, was a place where prisoners who broke the rules were kept in one of the 20 cells. Inmates would be kept in the dark, dank, roach-infested cells, with one or more inmates, with little to eat and no place of comfort to sleep.

Bread and water was the common meal with a lunch provided every three days. The stronger inmates would take the food from the weaker, leaving many to suffer hunger as well as other hardships.

Many prisoners died in the hole and some believe that their tortured spirits remain, prompting reports of negative paranormal energy in this area.

Visitors to this area sometimes leave after being overwhelmed with nausea. Others feel chills run through their bodies. The feeling of being watched permeates in the rooms and some have even reported seeing glowing eyes peering at them from dark corners.

The Mansfield Reformatory Organization
Today the Reformatory is in the process of being restored. The Mansfield Reformatory Organization is working diligently to prevent any future deterioration.

Back when I was a young, broke college student, a friend and I thought we had stumbled upon the deal of a lifetime: A huge 5 bedroom house with 2 bathrooms for dirt cheap rent. The house was in a kind of out of the way place in Virginia, but it suited our needs and the rent was unbelievably cheap. Let me preface this by saying that in the Commonwealth of Virginia, there are no disclosure laws in real estate, meaning that the buyer/renter is not entitled to know the history of the house before signing on the dotted line.

Within a month of moving into this house, odd things began happening. The electricity didn't work very well. At first we attributed this to the fact that the house was very old, built in the early 1900's and the most recent re-wiring of the house had been done in the 50's. Also, the main breaker for the house was located outside in a barn that stood about 20 yards from the house itself and was connected by several crude-looking overhead wires. Whenever the breakers tripped (which was at least 4 times a week) we'd have to get the flashlight and go to the barn to flip them back on. The electricity wasn't the only problem. We had an answering machine that never recorded any messages. Sometimes the light would be blinking and when we'd push play, it was nothing but static. This was before DVR and we worked a lot of nights, so we would try to record our shows, but it never worked. Just static and white noise. We also found it odd that pictures never turned out in or around the house. We went though 13 rolls of film before finally giving up.

The first time we realized that we were dealing with more than just bad wiring was approximately 4 weeks after we moved in. As we were heading to the garage (which was only accessible through the door in the kitchen or the heavy old automatic door outside) we came to a dead stop. There was a man standing in our garage! He just stood there and was completely oblivious when we screamed. My friend slammed the door and locked it and called out to the man that we had a gun and were calling the cops. She retrieved the said gun and we opened the door again. The man was gone. Just poof, vanished. As previously stated, there were only 2 ways in - door through kitchen or automatic door outside. The automatic door was very noisy, so we would have heard it open and we had been in the kitchen all morning so there was no way he got in that way. We were baffled, but went about life like normal. That incident seemed to open the floodgates, because after that it really became obvious we were dealing with something not of this world.

We used to hear the sound of a baby crying, followed by the sound of a rocking chair up in the attic. We investigated and found nothing. Certain spots would always remain cold. Cold is not something you come across in Virginia in the summer. Numerous times we woke up to find all the contents of the pantry on the floor. There were dozens of other odd things that happened, but I'm just highlighting some of the more bizarre occurrences.

As things began to escalate, we got more and more nervous. The pinnacle was when we were sitting in the kitchen one evening, playing cards and waiting for some guests to arrive. Naturally, the lights went out, so we went out to trip the breaker. When we came out of the barn, we saw our friend running up the steps of the porch with a baseball bat. When we asked what he was doing, he told us that he saw a man standing in our living room then walk up the stairs! Scared, we crowded behind him and searched the house with the bat and a gun. Nothing!

About 2 weeks after that, my roommates boss asked her why she never returned his call about switching a shift. She said that she hadn't gotten any messages and he proceeded to tell her about the man that answered the phone and told her we were out! Upon further investigation, we discovered that several other people had the same experience when they called! We were thoroughly freaked out by this time, so we decided to ask some of the town's resident's about the house.

We found out that the house was always vacant within 6 months of it being rented out. Although we were scared, we still stayed because of how cheap it was.

One evening, we were in the living room watching TV. When we heard a huge thud against the basement door. When I say thud, I mean the whole wall shook and the door frame came loose. The door was locked, but we were scared and put a chair against it. We could hear growling on the other side and claws on the door, so we again got the gun. We figured at first that a wild animal must have gotten in there, so we went outside to check the entrance. It was bolted shut. We even checked the tiny windows, nothing broken.

We finally went back into the house and opened the basement door. Nothing there! I've never seen claw marks like that before or since. It was as if whatever had done it only had 3 toes! Besides, nothing that was indigenous to the area was 3 toed or could have gotten in there without opening the door or breaking the window! Not to mention, none of the local animals, say a bear, could have exerted that much force to warp a door frame! We moved a week later.

We could never really come up with any idea of what happened in that house or why. To this day, it remains a mystery. And to this day, nobody lives there for more than 6 months before leaving.

I took a large room, far up Broadway, in a huge old building whose upper stories had been wholly unoccupied for years, until I came. The place had long been given up to dust and cobwebs, to solitude and silence. I seemed groping among the tombs and invading the privacy of the dead, that first night I climbed up to my quarters. For the first time in my life a superstitious dread came over me; and as I turned a dark angle of the stairway and an invisible cobweb swung its lazy woof in my face and clung there, I shuddered as one who had encountered a phantom.

I was glad enough when I reached my room and locked out the mould and the darkness. A cheery fire was burning in the grate, and I sat down before it with a comforting sense of relief. For two hours I sat there, thinking of bygone times; recalling old scenes, and summoning half-forgotten faces out of the mists of the past; listening, in fancy, to voices that long ago grew silent for all time, and to once familiar songs that nobody sings now. And as my reverie softened down to a sadder and sadder pathos, the shrieking of the winds outside softened to a wail, the angry beating of the rain against the panes diminished to a tranquil patter, and one by one the noises in the street subsided, until the hurrying footsteps of the last belated straggler died away in the distance and left no sound behind.

The fire had burned low. A sense of loneliness crept over me. I arose and undressed, moving on tiptoe about the room, doing stealthily what I had to do, as if I were environed by sleeping enemies whose slumbers it would be fatal to break. I covered up in bed, and lay listening to the rain and wind and the faint creaking of distant shutters, till they lulled me to sleep.

I slept profoundly, but how long I do not know. All at once I found myself awake, and filled with a shuddering expectancy. All was still. All but my own heart -- I could hear it beat. Presently the bedclothes began to slip away slowly toward the foot of the bed, as if some one were pulling them! I could not stir; I could not speak. Still the blankets slipped deliberately away, till my breast was uncovered. Then with a great effort I seized them and drew them over my head. I waited, listened, waited. Once more that steady pull began, and once more I lay torpid a century of dragging seconds till my breast was naked again. At last I roused my energies and snatched the covers back to their place and held them with a strong grip. I waited. By and by I felt a faint tug, and took a fresh grip. The tug strengthened to a steady strain -- it grew stronger and stronger. My hold parted, and for the third time the blankets slid away. I groaned. An answering groan came from the foot of the bed! Beaded drops of sweat stood upon my forehead. I was more dead than alive. Presently I heard a heavy footstep in my room -- the step of an elephant, it seemed to me -- it was not like anything human. But it was moving FROM me -- there was relief in that. I heard it approach the door -- pass out without moving bolt or lock -- and wander away among the dismal corridors, straining the floors and joists till they creaked again as it passed -- and then silence reigned once more.

When my excitement had calmed, I said to myself, "This is a dream -- simply a hideous dream." And so I lay thinking it over until I convinced myself that it WAS a dream, and then a comforting laugh relaxed my lips and I was happy again. I got up and struck a light; and when I found that the locks and bolts were just as I had left them, another soothing laugh welled in my heart and rippled from my lips. I took my pipe and lit it, and was just sitting down before the fire, when -- down went the pipe out of my nerveless fingers, the blood forsook my cheeks, and my placid breathing was cut short with a gasp! In the ashes on the hearth, side by side with my own bare footprint, was another, so vast that in comparison mine was but an infant's'! Then I had HAD a visitor, and the elephant tread was explained.

I put out the light and returned to bed, palsied with fear. I lay a long time, peering into the darkness, and listening. Then I heard a grating noise overhead, like the dragging of a heavy body across the floor; then the throwing down of the body, and the shaking of my windows in response to the concussion. In distant parts of the building I heard the muffled slamming of doors. I heard, at intervals, stealthy footsteps creeping in and out among the corridors, and up and down the stairs. Sometimes these noises approached my door, hesitated, and went away again. I heard the clanking of chains faintly, in remote passages, and listened while the clanking grew nearer -- while it wearily climbed the stairways, marking each move by the loose surplus of chain that fell with an accented rattle upon each succeeding step as the goblin that bore it advanced. I heard muttered sentences; half-uttered screams that seemed smothered violently; and the swish of invisible garments, the rush of invisible wings. Then I became conscious that my chamber was invaded -- that I was not alone. I heard sighs and breathings about my bed, and mysterious whisperings. Three little spheres of soft phosphorescent light appeared on the ceiling directly over my head, clung and glowed there a moment, and then dropped -- two of them upon my face and one upon the pillow. They spattered, liquidly, and felt warm. Intuition told me they had turned to gouts of blood as they fell -- I needed no light to satisfy myself of that. Then I saw pallid faces, dimly luminous, and white uplifted hands, floating bodiless in the air -floating a moment and then disappearing. The whispering ceased, and the voices and the sounds, and a solemn stillness followed. I waited and listened. I felt that I must have light or die. I was weak with fear. I slowly raised myself toward a sitting posture, and my face came in contact with a clammy hand! All strength went from me apparently, and I fell back like a stricken invalid. Then I heard the rustle of a garment -- it seemed to pass to the door and go out.

When everything was still once more, I crept out of bed, sick and feeble, and lit the gas with a hand that trembled as if it were aged with a hundred years. The light brought some little cheer to my spirits. I sat down and fell into a dreamy contemplation of that great footprint in the ashes. By and by its outlines began to waver and grow dim. I glanced up and the broad gas flame was slowly wilting away. In the same moment I heard that elephantine tread again. I noted its approach, nearer and nearer, along the musty halls, and dimmer and dimmer the light waned. The tread reached my very door and paused -- the light had dwindled to a sickly blue, and all things about me lay in a spectral twilight. The door did not open, and yet I felt a faint gust of air fan my cheek, and presently was conscious of a huge, cloudy presence before me. I watched it with fascinated eyes. A pale glow stole over the Thing; gradually its cloudy folds took shape -- an arm appeared, then legs, then a body, and last a great sad face looked out of the vapor. Stripped of its filmy housings, naked, muscular and comely, the majestic Cardiff Giant loomed above me!

All my misery vanished -- for a child might know that no harm could come with that benignant countenance. My cheerful spirits returned at once, and in sympathy with them the gas flamed up brightly again. Never a lonely outcast was so glad to welcome company as I was to greet the friendly giant. I said:

"Why, is it nobody but you? Do you know, I have been scared to death for the last two or three hours? I am most honestly glad to see you. I wish I had a chair -- Here, here, don't try to sit down in that thing!

But it was too late. He was in it before I could stop him, and down he went -- I never saw a chair shivered so in my life.

"Stop, stop, You'll ruin ev--"

Too late again. There was another crash, and another chair was resolved into its original elements.

"Confound it, haven't you got any judgment at all? Do you want to ruin all the furniture on the place? Here, here, you petrified fool--"

But it was no use. Before I could arrest him he had sat down on the bed, and it was a melancholy ruin.

"Now what sort of a way is that to do? First you come lumbering about the place bringing a legion of vagabond goblins along with you to worry me to death, and then when I overlook an indelicacy of costume which would not be tolerated anywhere by cultivated people except in a respectable theater, and not even there if the nudity were of YOUR sex, you repay me by wrecking all the furniture you can find to sit down on. And why will you? You damage yourself as much as you do me. You have broken off the end of your spinal column, and littered up the floor with chips of your hams till the place looks like a marble yard. You ought to be ashamed of yourself -- you are big enough to know better."

"Well, I will not break any more furniture. But what am I to do? I have not had a chance to sit down for a century." And the tears came into his eyes.

"Poor devil," I said, "I should not have been so harsh with you. And you are an orphan, too, no doubt. But sit down on the floor here -- nothing else can stand your weight -- and besides, we cannot be sociable with you away up there above me; I want you down where I can perch on this high counting-house stool and gossip with you face to face."

So he sat down on the floor, and lit a pipe which I gave him, threw one of my red blankets over his shoulders, inverted my sitz-bath on his head, helmet fashion, and made himself picturesque and comfortable. Then he crossed his ankles, while I renewed the fire, and exposed the flat, honey-combed bottoms of his prodigious feet to the grateful warmth.

"What is the matter with the bottom of your feet and the back of your legs, that they are gouged up so?"

"Infernal chillblains -- I caught them clear up to the back of my head, roosting out there under Newell's farm. But I love the place; I love it as one loves his old home. There is no peace for me like the peace I feel when I am there."

We talked along for half an hour, and then I noticed that he looked tired, and spoke of it. "Tired?" he said. "Well, I should think so. And now I will tell you all about it, since you have treated me so well. I am the spirit of the Petrified Man that lies across the street there in the Museum. I am the ghost of the Cardiff Giant. I can have no rest, no peace, till they have given that poor body burial again. Now what was the most natural thing for me to do, to make men satisfy this wish? Terrify them into it! -- haunt the place where the body lay! So I haunted the museum night after night. I even got other spirits to help me. But it did no good, for nobody ever came to the museum at midnight. Then it occurred to me to come over the way and haunt this place a little. I felt that if I ever got a hearing I must succeed, for I had the most efficient company that perdition could furnish. Night after night we have shivered around through these mildewed halls, dragging chains, groaning, whispering, tramping up and down stairs, till, to tell you the truth, I am almost worn out. But when I saw a light in your room to-night I roused my energies again and went at it with a deal of the old freshness. But I am tired out -- entirely fagged out. Give me, I beseech you, give me some hope!"

I lit off my perch in a burst of excitement, and exclaimed:

"This transcends everything -- everything that ever did occur! Why you poor blundering old fossil, you have had all your trouble for nothing -- you have been haunting a PLASTER CAST of yourself -- the real Cardiff Giant is in Albany!

[Footnote by Twain: A fact. The original fraud was ingeniously and fraudfully duplicated, and exhibited in New York as the "only genuine" Cardiff Giant (to the unspeakable disgust of the owners of the real colossus) at the very same time that the latter was drawing crowds at a museum in Albany.]

Confound it, don't you know your own remains?"

I never saw such an eloquent look of shame, of pitiable humiliation, overspread a countenance before.

The Petrified Man rose slowly to his feet, and said:

"Honestly, IS that true?"

"As true as I am sitting here."

He took the pipe from his mouth and laid it on the mantel, then stood irresolute a moment (unconsciously, from old habit, thrusting his hands where his pantaloons pockets should have been, and meditatively dropping his chin on his breast), and finally said:

"Well -- I NEVER felt so absurd before. The Petrified Man has sold everybody else, and now the mean fraud has ended by selling its own ghost! My son, if there is any charity left in your heart for a poor friendless phantom like me, don't let this get out. Think how YOU would feel if you had made such an ass of yourself."

I heard his, stately tramp die away, step by step down the stairs and out into the deserted street, and felt sorry that he was gone, poor fellow -- and sorrier still that he had carried off my red blanket and my bath tub.

New Ghost Story

Back in 2000 I attended Columbus Sate Community College for the first time since graduating from high school. One of my first classes of the day was english 101. The class was held in Union Hall, a three floor building next to the cafeteria. Anyway, The teacher of the class was a believer in ghosts, and one day he told us of the weird happenings in the college buildings. Now before I go on I need to let you in on some background information about the area that the college sits on.
The grounds were once a catholic cemetery, not only were priests and nuns buried there but catholic families too. The sad part about this, is that when the city acquired the land, the records were poorly kept as to who and where the bodies were buried, so many of the bodies were left unexcused to only be discovered when a house or building was being built. Many of the bodies were never given a proper reburial so their soles are left to wander the campus.
This is where the stories come into play. One story is that of a family that lived in a house where Union Hall now stands. One night the house caught fire and the Mother and daughter were caught inside, the father was the only one who nearly escaped. The flames spread quickly and unfortunately killed the Mother and her daughter. As the father and witnesses looked on, they could hear the daughter cry out "Daddy, Daddy help me I'm burning" As time wore on people forgot the tragedy. But the Scene would repeat it's self over and over, not visually, but audibly.
After hearing this story I was intrigued, but kept on with my studies. Later that month I was on campus very early in the morning, I think it was 7 AM, for an unrelated english assignment. After I was finished with what I had to do I liked at my watch ad saw that it was still very early, so early in fact that the cafeteria wasn't even open. So I decided to go and sit outside my english class door until class started. As I walked up the stair well I thought about the story that my teacher had told us weeks earlier. So when I was near the floor that my class was on I decided to see for my self if the story was true about hearing the young girls voice. I quietly listened for a few moments, when I didn't hear anything I decided to keep going up the stairs. But as I put my foot on the next step, I heard it! I heard the little girls voice as if it were coming from a great distance..."Daddy, Daddy help me I'm burning".
I quickly went the rest of the way and got into the hall where I could get to my class when I thought to my self, What if that were a real child in the building that I was mistaking for a ghost? That was impossible, first off Columbus Sate has a rule that no children are allowed in any of the academic buildings unless they are a part of the lecture. So I was convinced that I really did hear the ghostly voice of the little girl.
This i not the end of the stories at Columbus Sate, a few other things happen in the Union Hall building, mostly at night when only a few students are in the building for night classes. Some have witnessed the elevators stop on the floor that they are at, as if some one pushed the floor button to get on, the doors will open and no one is there. The only thing wrong with this is that the elevators don't automatically go up and down on their own. When you get off the elevator, that's where the elevator car stays. Even stranger though are the mysterious animal paw prints on the lower floor of the building, as well as animal hair in the corners of the halls. The explanation for some of this is because in the bottom floor of the building there is an animal morgue, where veterinarian students learn about the anatomy of the animals. That would account for only some of the hairs. The rest have been found on the other floors where they shouldn't be, the paw prints shouldn't be there at all, no live animals are kept at the school. This brings me to another story of the building. On some nights the evening cleaning crew are mopping up the hall ways and sweeping the carpets of the empty class rooms, when something will catch their eye. the person will go to the door and look around the corner only to see the back side of a cat or dog, from the hind legs to the tail, When the animal goes around the corner the cleaning person will follow to get the animal out of the building, but when they get to where the animal was, it's gone. The doors are all closed and some times the animal has turned around a corner that leads to nowhere.
This is what I have so far, but there is more. I will send it later on this week. Thank you for your interest in what I have to tell you, not to many people are interested.

SQUIRES CASTLE Willoughby Hills, OHIO

Squire's Castle, located in Willoughby Hills in the Cleveland Metroparks, was built in the 1890s by Feargus B. Squire, an executive with the Standard Oil Company. The British-born Squire intended to create a country estate, modeled after those in Britain. He began by building the gatehouse, complete with a living room, several bedrooms, and a hunt room with mounted animal heads. The Squires used the gatehouse as a weekend retreat while plans were being finalized for the main house.

Mrs. Squire never liked the country. A city girl, she was scared of the quiet country nights and the sounds of animals. Urban legend says that she had so many nightmares that she was afraid to go to sleep and consequently went insane. According to the legend, she died one night when she became so frightened that she fell and broke her neck attempting to flee. The truth lies somewhere else. Mrs. Squire, although afraid of the country, did not die at the gatehouse, although she did die young, in 1929.

Feargus Squire never completed the estate after his wife's death, and the gatehouse was abandoned. Today, the structure is but a stone shell, owned by the Cleveland Metroparks. Periodic functions are held at the "castle." Park visitors can walk around the structure and imagine it adorned with Tiffany glass, carved mouldings, and elaborate European furnishings.

There have been numerous reports of a woman in the upstairs window at night, sometimes with a lantern. Could it be Mrs. Squire?

Franklin Castle Tour

A friend of mine, Chris, and his wife Brenda took a tour of Franklin Castle the other night. Chris took a lot of pictures and I've spent the day perusing them for any signs of anything paranormal. So far, no luck. The tour sounded like a good time anyway... I'll let him tell the story:

It was very interesting. but kinda uneventful. I used to get an uneasy feeling in my grandfathers basement and I really expected that there, but nothing. The house is in pretty bad shape, the fire caused a lot of smoke damage which is still present. It was really cool. The guy that was doing the tour I kinda expected to be all gothed-out and trying to be spooky, but he wasn't. He was very knowledgable of the history. He actually debunked a lot of the urban legend. They are putting $3 million dollars into it and they are making it a social club memberships are $5000 a person though. It's gonna be a non profit preservation society with a hundred year lease on the house from him and the woman Michelle who own it. She is the "California" lady but she actually only lived in California for a short time. She was born here and moved back here. ... I took 288 pics and there was only one questionable thing in the pics that I saw so far. I generally think that orbs are just dust, but there was a pretty bright spot on the wall on the 4th floor, and I took multiple pics of the same spot but it only shows up in pic. one funny thing is as Brenda and I were going to the third floor, we saw this black flash, we later found out it was a bat, LOL! but for a couple of minutes we weren't sure. It was pretty cool he took about 2 hours for the tour and then he let you walk around the house for as long as you want, you can go anywhere you want unsupervised. The reason that he doesn't want audio or video taken is that they are in the process of filming a documentary, and he doesn't want a ton of video of his tour going out on the net and hurting the documentary sales. They are doing it to raise money for the restoration. He seemed genuinely interested in saving the house for future generations not in hyping up the haunted part just for money.

The Moonville Tunnel is located off Shea Road in the Zaleski Forest in Vinton County. If you'd like directions, click here.

The old railroad tunnel is located along Raccoon Creek in the one of Ohio's densest wooded areas - the Zaleski Forest. The woods around it is so dense that you can't even see the tunnel until you're on the path right in front of it!

The small mining town of Moonville, which was founded in the 1850's, was once located around the tunnel which was used by the Marietta-Cincinnati Railroad. The town really was tiny, during it's peak in the 1870's there were maybe 60-100 residents living there. The town totally disappeared sometime in the 1930s...now all that's left is the tunnel, the cemetery, and a few old house foundations. The railroad stopped using the tracks in late 1986, and the tracks were torn out in 1988.

Many people consider the Moonville Tunnel one of Ohio's most haunted locations. Here are the ghosts I have heard about:

Railroad worker: The ghost that is most often seen at the Moonville Tunnel is the ghost of a railroad worker. On March 29, 1859 a Marietta-Cincinnati railroad worker fell onto the tracks outside the tunnel and was hit by a train. Today people claim to see his ghost walking along the tracks with a lantern. He is always seen wearing his railroad uniform. One legend has it that his head was decapitated when the train killed him, so some claim the ghost is headless.

Young woman: In 1905 a young woman was walking home along the tracks when she was killed by a passing train. Today people see her ghost walking along the tracks just outside of the tunnel, carrying a lantern and dressed in a flowing white dress or robe.

Black miner: In 1920 a group of black miners were playing cards in a shack near the roalroad. They were drinking very heavily. When it was time to go home, one of the workers was walking along the tracks. Since he was so drunk, he wasn't paying too much attention to things going on around him. He heard a sound behind him, and when he turned around he saw a train heading towards him! He wasn't alert enough to get off the tracks, so he started waving his lantern in an attempt to stop the train. Obviously, the conductors didn't have enough time to stop the train and the miner was killed. Today people claim to see the ghost of a tall black man with a gray beard and miner's hat waving a lantern in the tunnel.

Man murdered at the inn: In 1936 a man was murdered at the inn that sat to the right of the tunnel. Many people claim to see the murdered man standing near the top of the tunnel where the inn used to stand.

Young man: In 1954 a young man was waiting for a train to pass before crossing the tracks. The train passed, and he started to cross the tracks. However, one of the cars on the train had broken free and it ran over him. Today many people claim to see a red, glowing form near the tunnel, who they believe is this young man.

Ten year old girl: The last death at the tunnel was that of a ten year old girl in 1986. She was playing near the tracks when a train came through and killed her. Today people claim to hear a little girl laughing near the tunnel.

Penny Lott, a website visitor, sent me a couple e-mails about her eerie encounters at the Moonville Tunnel:

It was cool. I did not have a camera so my boyfriend and I stopped at walmart on the way out and bought a Kodak Advantix 35mm. We stopped and took 2 pix of the sunset cuz it was really beautiful last evening, then when we got to the tunnel we took 1 pic of the entrance and 2 inside the tunnel and then the flash stopped working. We tried to finish up the roll of film by pointing our flashlights at the walls and taking pics but I figure they will turn out all black. Don't know if the camera was defective or if something out there did not want to be photographed! Have never had a camera do that.

Penny's second e-mail was also very interesting! More creepy happenings:

I have been back to Moonville 2 times since the incident with my camera. Another strange thing that happened after the night that my camera stopped working is, as we were taking the path back to the car i felt like i walked through some spider webs or something and it brushed against my face, the next morning i had a really awful nightmare about that side of my face being all burned and scared, and some how i had the name "Frank" pop into my head and well, i do not know anyone named frank! So i have been trying to do some research in hopes of maybe finding out some of the victims names that died out there.

A group of us went out to Moonville on Friday August the 13th, we found the cemetary and looked around took a few pics and then headed out to the tunnel. We looked around for a while. On the way out, my boyfriend and I were lagging back behind our friends, we were close to the end of tunnel and everyone else was near the entrance. My boyfriend kept looking behind him and shining his flashlight back behind him saying that he could hear something. I didnt hear anything. Then all the sudden he just shuddered and gasp and said something had touched him, that it felt as if something ran its hands up both of sides of his waist (as if you would tickle someone). My boyfriend is not a small man nor is he easily scared he is about 5'11 and 220 pounds, and he was scared , had goosebumps all over him! Well it was about that time that i grabbed him by his shirt and proceeded to try to drag him out of the tunnel, he was scaring me! LOL...I have some pictures from both of the previous visits, some appear to have obs in them, but i am not a professional and im not sure if they are true orbs.

The last time we went to Moonville was unevenful, ran into some kids that were camping out inside the tunnel and they were drunk, so that kind of put a damper on the experiance. Hope you enjoyed!

I also received an e-mail from Bruce P. in July 2008 regarding the Moonville Tunnel:

I just read that the Moonville Tunnel has been sealed off and is no longer accessible. I personally find this very hard to believe since there is no way to get heavy equipment to the tunnel short of dropping it from a helicopter. 2004 was when I was there, so I don't know for sure. It was a difficult trek to reach the tunnel, lots of jungle-thick woods and a narrow river that must be waded through (it's only about 2 feet deep during dry season). The main reason for this email is that I wanted to give you a warning. If you do decide to go and have a look, make sure that it is during a dry spell. The area is prone to flash-flooding, and the only thing you can honestly call a road nearby is often underwater during rainy periods. Due to the long hike, it's quite possible to get caught in a storm and find that you are unable to get back to civilization because the road has flooded. So be careful when you choose to go and take lots of bug spray and something to keep the ticks out of your hair. Also watch out for snakes, we saw several when we were there. I'm no expert on snakes, so I cannot say for sure, but I doubt they were poisonous. Can't say the same for the spiders though, there are brown recluses in there (even though they say those spiders can't be found in Ohio...I know, I have been bitten by one before). Take plenty of supplies, water, lights and batteries, etc because the place is rather isolated and do not go there alone. There are several sketchy points that must be climbed in order to reach the tunnel, and you could easily fall and get hurt.

I received an e-mail from Randy Brown in August 2008, with some information about the rumored closure of the Moonville Tunnel:

I visited Moonville today and it is not closed. In fact, it was kinda busy with two cars there on my first pass to the cemetery, and one getting there just as I was leaving. I took some pictures that I will post on timelessphotovideo.com soon.

I also received an e-mail about the Moonville Tunnel from Lisa B. in August 2008:

Myself and three friends visited Moonville last night (August 12, 2008), and I assure you it is not closed. We walked our normal path through the woods, no problem at all. When we got up to the tunnel, we took pics of the outside, all the way through ,all of the walls...just about everything you can think of, only we didn't have very good light so we did not go on top of the tunnel this time. Nothing really over the top happened, but a couple of things that we have not quite figured out yet: halfway through the tunnel, an almost ice cold "breeze" came through that we all felt. There were also unexplained sounds while we sat in the dark in the middle of the tunnel, almost like the sound the gravel makes when you walk through, but in single beats that kept getting closer (that's when I turned my light back on and ran out). But other than that, nothing else inside. On the trip back to the car, which we made a quick one, we heard these creepy loud noises. One sounded something like a howl, another in a lighter voice like a scream, but both repeated. Since the sounds were coming from above us and to the left, we hurried to the car because of other noises behind us. We headed that way in search of an explanation. We drove for quite a few miles, and there was nothing but woods and a few horse paths, so that ruled out someone messing with us. We also went to the cemetery and took some pics. Nothing happened up there either, but every time I go there I get a sad feeling. We plan to go back sometime next week to see if we hear the same noises, and try to figure out what went on last night. On a different note, last night was the first time I had been there for about a year, and there was about three times more grafitti in the tunnel than before. There was also red paint, I guess to look like blood all over the plaque inside. It's because of stupid people like that why we are not allowed inside more interesting places. I wish people would just be respectful.

Dark Figure Productions has taken most of the year off so far. We look forward to putting together a new dvd in the future and have recently spoken to Richard Crawford about new ideas. We have had a few set backs with the manufacturing of volume 2 but plan to get it out this week starting with Border's Books Eastgate. Our first set of volume 2 will be smaller than anticipated since we are making them ourselves. The manufacturer should have the rest out within a week. We can't wait to get them out and on the shelves and anticipate selling out at every location right away. So get there fast. I've been watching a copy this week and I know it's our best work to date and we have had alot of positive feedback from a few selected previewers. Thanks for all the support.

Dark Figure will be heavily promoting this dvd after learning a great deal from our success last year. Tv appearences, radio interviews, internet and newspaper interviews should be coming out in every town/city we traveled to for volume 2. We have alot of work ahead but it's all going to an amazing ride. New host and update on the dvd

Last Monday we got some bad news Richard Crawford would not be able to host the dvd because of some health issues. So the first thing we think is Richard get better and then. What are we going to do? We have to find a new host and will we still be able to use the same stories? So then we put up a casting call out to 2 websites. So in 3 days we recieve over 50 resumes, headshots, emails and more, spanning internationally. From there we interviewed 2 based on our critieria. Today we made our decision and picked up Greg Fuller from Cincinnati. We are very happy about Greg's work ethic, enthusiaism, and ability to go beyond the norm for us. We are currently booking our agressive marketing campaign and will be wrapping up the dvd in june. The stories in this dvd will include....The Lofts

Even though the Halloween season has passed, Dark Figure Productions continues to emerge on the independent film scene. Border's Books of Eastgate did not have a local section that included DVDs, until Dark Figure Productions approached them. "True Ghost Stories from Ohio with Richard Crawford" was the very first local DVD to appear on their shelves in September of 2006. Recently they also became the first local DVD to show up on the shelves of Joseph Beth book stores in Cincinnati. Both of these stores are known for their local CD sections but had never taken a chance on a local DVD until now. For 2007 they will be on the road, tracking down more of Ohio's true ghost stories for the second volume. Beginning in February Dark Figure Productions will be covering such sites as: Hawk's Taverne at the Mill in Lancaster, Westwood Town Hall in Cincinnati, Olde Trail Taverne in Yellow Springs, The Moonville Tunnel in Vinton County as well as many others. On Febuary 19th Dark Figure Productions arrived at Hawk's Taverne at the Mill beginning production of their highly anticipated volume two. Have you ever heard the story of the killer calling from inside the house? During filming there was a phone call from inside the taverne to the taverne while all employees were in plain sight. Numerous hauntings occur at Hawk's, from phone calls, to flying pool balls when nobody is there and a mysterious man in brown. A bartender there spoke of an odd occurance with this man/being. He was filling a picture of beer for this man and having a conversation about one of the bar maids lasting most of the night. When he mentioned it to the other employees and patrons of the bar nobody claimed to see this man at any point during the night. The man knew details about the bar maid that nobody could have known that didn't work in the bar. He promptly left for the night and after a few weeks of coercing returned to work. This is one of many true ghost stories from the buckeye state.

Dark Figure brings these true stories to life with gripping visuals and sinister background music. The filmmakers dive right into the fearful tales going into an underground church in Utopia which features scratch marks on the cieling from people trying claw their way out during a freak flood that drowned all the congregation but six. Another story features the most haunted place in all of Ohio, Deadmans’ Curve, at the intersection of state route 125 and 222- home of the Faceless Hitchhiker. This intersection has resulted in over 70 deaths since 1969. The Faceless Hitchhicker was also featured in the Haunted Ohio book series and the Weird Ohio book.
The scariest part of this documentary is that all the stories are true. The host is a well versed historian who quite easily backs up all the stories with documented information taken from the local historical society.
